Today, I would like you to practise your cutting skills. In Year 1, we have been really struggling with our cutting skills so now it is time for us to practise!

Have a go at using a pair of scissors to complete these cutting activities.

Now draw some of your own and cut them out. Please do not worry if you don’t have access to a printer you can just draw them!

Cutting Top Tips:
1.
Both thumbs should be facing up.
2. Elbows in.
3.
Hold the scissors the right way up! Make sure your thumb is in the little hole.
4.
The writing hand is the cutting hand.
5. Build those muscles! Try some fine motor activities to help your child’s strength.

Now have a think… how could you join materials together?

Have a try! Find some materials in your home and try to join them together.

National Storytelling Week

This week is National Storytelling Week

Why don't you have a go at storytelling as a family?

Ideas to try:

  • In school we sometimes sit in a circle and ask each child to add a part/sentence of a story to help to create a made up story, the adults help to structure the story. The more you do it the better the children get and understand a story structure.

  • Why not ask your child to tell you or their brother/sister their favourite story?

  • Perhaps mum or dad could make up a story for bedtime?

Listen to the song 'Let the Bright Seraphim' by Handel

About the song:
Let The Bright Seraphim by George Frederick Handel (1685-1759) comes from a religious piece of work and was completed in 1742 (a long time ago!). This song is a well-known Aria (an Italian word for a long solo song, usually opera). It was written for two main performers: a soprano (a high female voice) and a trumpet. They are accompanied by a few string instruments.

- Do you like the song?
- What instruments can you hear?
- Can you guess what the style of music is?
- Is it similar or different to the blues song from last week? Why?
- The main solo instrument is a trumpet. Can you think of any other songs that have a trumpet in?
